Epilepsy Treatment in Dogs and Cats, the Science.

Epilepsy Management

CBD can significantly reduce seizure frequency in dogs with epilepsy, with studies showing up to 89% of dogs experiencing fewer seizures (Evidence for the Use of CBD to Treat Canine Idiopathic Epilepsy). This makes it a promising option for managing this condition, especially when traditional medications are insufficient.

Introduction

CBD, a non-psychoactive compound derived from hemp (Cannabis sativa L., <0.3% THC), has gained popularity for its potential therapeutic benefits in pets.

Mechanism and Efficacy

CBD interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), particularly CB1 receptors in the brain, to reduce neuronal excitability, which is beneficial for managing seizures. Studies have demonstrated its anticonvulsant properties in pets, especially dogs with idiopathic epilepsy.

Clinical Evidence in Dogs: A study by the AKC Canine Health Foundation (Evidence for the Use of CBD to Treat Canine Idiopathic Epilepsy) found that 89% of dogs experienced a reduction in seizure frequency when treated with CBD oil, compared to a placebo. This was part of a controlled trial where dogs were given CBD for 12 weeks, showing promising results for reducing seizure days.

Additional Studies: Another study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (CBD clinical trial results on seizure frequency in dogs ‘encouraging’) reported similar findings, with 89% of dogs showing reduced seizures at a dose of 2 mg/kg twice daily. However, the study noted increases in liver enzyme levels, such as alanine aminotransferase (ALT), when combined with other anti-seizure drugs, warranting further investigation.

Safety Profile: CBD is generally well-tolerated, with common side effects including vomiting and decreased appetite, as noted in the AKC study. Long-term use showed elevated alkaline phosphatase (ALP), but these effects were reversible (The

Application in Cats: While feline-specific studies are limited, anecdotal reports suggest CBD may help reduce seizure frequency in cats with epilepsy, similar to dogs, due to comparable ECS function. However, dosing must be lower due to cats’ slower metabolism (CBD for Cats – American Kennel Club).
